Types of Cough
In the main there are two types of coughs:
Productive cough - where heavy congestion is felt in the chest, caused by excess mucus being produced, which can get very thick and sticky, making it difficult to cough up. Sometimes nasal congestion may also be experienced.
Dry cough - where the airways become inflamed, without producing excess mucus. The cough is generally irritating, and can cause the throat to become sore due to coughing.
In order to ensure an accurate diagnosis is made, it is important to seek advice from a healthcare professional, such as your pharmacist or doctor. In cases where an infection is present, antibiotics may be prescribed in addition to over-the-counter medicines that work to relieve general symptoms.
