The old saying you are what you eat or
drink or smoke. Overweight people can be at an increased risk of chest
infections. If this is the case, discuss a weight loss program with your
doctor and try some low impact exercises.
Acute and chronic bronchitis may be more common in smokers. If you smoke
and suffer congestion you may consider giving up smoking as your first
priority. If members of your family suffer bronchitis, take care not to
smoke around them. If you really can't give up, try to limit smoking to
outside the home environment. The QUIT organisation can provide some
assistance to stop smoking.
While the occasional drink, especially the 'medicinal brandy', may make
you feel better, heavy drinkers may be prone to serious chest conditions
such as bronchitis. If you are worried about alcohol consumption, discuss
ways of cutting down with your doctor or medical adviser.
As a final word, at the first sign of congestion, drink plenty of fluids.
Consider steam inhalation. A few drops of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of hot
water may help ease the symptoms. |
