| Treating a Dry Irritating Cough |
 |
Generally for a dry cough that is
considered safe to try to stop, the type of product most often selected is
one called a 'suppressant'.
Suppressants work by mildly sedating that part of the brain that controls
the coughing reflex. This then reduces the amount of coughing that is
providing no benefit to the body. It's important to remember that all
cough suppressants have a mild sedatory effect on the brain and general
nervous system and can therefore cause drowsiness. However, this makes
them particularly effective for irritating coughs that tend to occur at
night and stop you from getting a good nights sleep. |
